We'd also like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption to those living close to the work. This will ensure the safety of the road is maintained for all users. This will ensure a smoother surface and extend the life of the existing surface. We will complete the work overnight when traffic is lower to reduce the impact on road users and the local economy.

For up to date details of closures please check our Travel Updates page. The project aims to create a Smart Luminaire which is capable of the usual functions of a street light, but will also include technology to support autonomous vehicles. This is a proof of concept, which will host Wi-Fi enabled technology for communicating with autonomous vehicles in the future. The trial will not impact the road user directly, the only visible difference or noticeable change will be improved LED lighting.

The installation of the Smart Luminaires will take place overnight during the first 2 weeks, Monday to Friday. This will include lane closures, and a small diversion whilst we work at the northern side of the roundabout. The installation of the Smart Luminaires will include the replacement of the lighting head itself, and not the lighting column.

Once installed, there will be no traffic management in place at this location. There will be no autonomous vehicles trialled on the Strategic Road Network SRN as part of this proof of concept stage. This will again include lane closures, and a small diversion whilst we work at the northern side of the roundabout.

The LED lighting will remain in place at this location permanently. This maintenance is a continuous activity that happens beneath the viaducts in the West Midlands to ensure the motorways keep connecting the country.

This reduces the need for future maintenance, meaning less roadworks impacting the motorways. Our work will be below the viaduct and will have no impact on the M5 itself. The work will take place during the day.

We may need some localised overnight closures of roads beneath the viaduct to set up the scaffolding for our work to take place. These will be minimal and diversions only very short. Where the works affect a local road, we will work with the local councils to find the safest and least impactful way to undertake the works.

We now need to work on a section of the viaduct where it passes over the A Spon Lane South.
