Goblin guide why is it good

Cards that help gain life are powerful when Goblin Guide's sole purpose is to whittle down life totals. Moving away from creatures, non-creature spells such as Collective Brutality can be back-breaking, and Timely Reinforcements and Lightning Helix are all-time favorites of control decks for dealing with Goblin Guide.

Another way to tackle Goblin Guide is by brick-walling a creature that only has two points of power. Creatures such as Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Thought-Knot Seer can come down as early as the second turn, and in the case of the latter, can even nab a burn spell from the opponent's hand. Hollow One is another viable big creature that can be cheated in for cheap, as is Vengevine.

Even the miniscule Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a fantastic blocker due to her first strike, and she makes burn spells particularly inefficient as an added bonus. Thoughtseize isn't as good as you think. It's understandable to think that Thoughtseize against a Goblin Guide deck is a good idea.

After all, you're trading two life from the Thoughtseize for a burn spell in the opponent's hand, which is usually worth three life. This, however, doesn't take into account that your opponent is essential dealing you two life at the cost of paying zero mana! In fact, you're doing a favor for your opponent by paying for the life loss with your lands. While cards such as Duress and Inquisition of Kozilek are effective, don't fall into the trap of Thoughtseizing your guide-wielding opponent.

There's a good chance that the turn one play from your opponent playing Goblin Guide is, well, Goblin Guide. This isn't to say that you should keep questionable hands just to keep a land on top, but it's also important to consider that you could effectively negate your mulligan if your opponent attacks with a Goblin Guide. Goblin Guide is sometimes a burn spell that deals up to eight points of damage. Given that fact, don't make your opponent's Goblin Guide's job any easier than it has to be.

Your last point of the life may be the only important point, but lethal burn damage is like objects in the mirror — they are closer than they appear.
